ESR Journal Family confirms its position as Europe’s number one home of radiology science and education

Vienna, July 5, 2023 – The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is happy to share the recent developments of its journal family including its latest Impact Factor results. Of special note, this year has seen the first ever Impact Factor assigned to the ESR’s youngest journal European Radiology Experimental. In a recent release, European Radiology, the flagship publication for clinical science, received an Impact Factor 2022 of 5.9. Insights into Imaging, dedicated to critical and educational articles, received an Impact Factor 2022 of 4.7, and European Radiology Experimental, dedicated to novel approaches and research pre-clinical setting, received its first-ever Impact Factor of 3.8.

Despite a slight decrease in absolute numbers, which can be observed in most journals listed in the ‘Radiology, nuclear medicine & medical imaging’ category, European Radiology and Insights into Imaging improved their ranking (ranks 16 and 29, respectively), underlining their position as leading journals of their field. As the journals and its publisher are signatories of DORA, assessing quality is more than looking only at the Impact Factor parameter; the ESR family journals are also leaders in the field in terms of usage and engagement.

“The ESR is very happy with the development and establishment of its journal family. We are proud to have not only one, but three outstanding journals”, says Prof. Regina Beets-Tan, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors. “For a leading society like the ESR, it is important and self-evident to have the following areas fostered through our publications: the clinical science through European Radiology, the critical reflection of our own practice through Insights into Imaging, and the future development of our field in early stages through European Radiology Experimental.”

“The Impact Factor is not the most important metric for a journal; however it is scrutinised by many authors and institutions, and I am very pleased to see that European Radiology improved its position reaching top 20 within its category,” stated Prof. Yves Menu, Editor in Chief of ESR’s flagship journal. “Looking at usage and engagement data, European Radiology represents a long-standing institution. Considering the ever-increasing submissions, fast-evolving trends, and rising competition, publishing such a wide range of high-quality research in all areas relevant for clinical radiology is a huge undertaking. Only by surrounding oneself with such an excellent team of editors, hundreds of committed reviewers, and led by a world-leading society like the ESR is, was this made possible – and I thank everyone involved.”

Regarding Insights into Imaging, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Prof. Luis Marti-Bonmati said, “I am pleased to see Insights into Imaging maintaining its position in quartile 1 of the Impact Factor ranking. But looking at more than solely this one parameter, our journal is extremely successful in usage, with more than 3 million downloads per year. This shows how relevant our articles and critical thinking are for our community, as they truly affect how we practice radiology in our daily lives. I am very grateful for the support of so many people involved, particularly my editorial board, the many reviewers and, of course our authors, who incorporate our approaches into their articles.”

Finally, Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology Experimental, Francesco Sardanelli, is overjoyed to announce the receipt of the journal’s first-ever Impact Factor. “I am very proud of our young journal which received its first Impact Factor, as this underlines the significance of the journal’s scope: all clinical or technical improvements in our practice started somewhere – as a new idea or an experimentation tested out in a pre-clinical setting before moving to the next step. This is a team achievement, and my gratitude goes out to the outstanding and committed editorial board members, to all our excellent reviewers, and of course to all the authors who supported our young journal and trusted in our future”, he said.
