ESR Announces New Leadership Following ECR 2026

Vienna, Austria – March 16, 2026 – The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is pleased to announce the newly appointed members of its Board of Directors and Executive Council following the ESR General Assembly held on March 8.

Leading the society for the upcoming year Minerva Becker (Switzerland) assumes the esteemed role of Chair of the ESR Board of Directors, the society’s highest governing position. Mathias Prokop (The Netherlands) becomes ESR President and will also serve as Congress President of ECR 2027, continuing the society’s tradition of aligning ESR leadership with the strategic direction of the European Congress of Radiology.

The ESR warmly welcomes Emanuele Neri (Italy) to the Board of Directors where he will take on the position of 2nd Vice President, following his successful election in January. 

The ESR also extends its sincere appreciation to Andrea Rockall (United Kingdom) for her leadership as Chair of the Board of Directors over the past year. Following the conclusion of her term, she now continues her service to the society as ESR Past-President.

In addition, the following new chairs have been appointed to the ESR Executive Council committees:

  • Isabelle Thomassin-Naggara – Chair, Quality, Safety & Standards Committee
  • Jacob Visser – Chair, Subspecialities & Allied Sciences Committee
  • Marco Francone – Chair, Communications & Interdisciplinary Affairs Committee
  • Daniel Pinto dos Santos – Chair, Finance & Internal Affairs Committee

Additionally, the General Assembly approved a decision to include the Scientific Directors of the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR) and European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EBIR), as well as the Chief Editor of the ESR Journals as non-voting, ex-officio members of the Executive Council. The ESR welcomes EDiR Scientific Director Laura Oleaga, EIBIR Scientific Director Regina Beets-Tan and Chief Editor of the ESR Journals Bernd Hamm as they join the council to represent their respective institutions.

Finally, the ESR expresses its deepest gratitude to Carlo Catalano (Italy), whose term on the Board of Directors concluded on March 8. In addition to his service on the Board, Prof. Catalano previously served as Chair of the ESR Education Committee, where he played an important role in shaping the society’s educational strategy. The ESR thanks him for his many years of dedicated service and lasting contributions to the organisation.
