Clinical Decision Support
ESR iGuide

ESR iGuide, a solution by the European Society of Radiology, offers readily available and user-friendly imaging referral guidelines throughout Europe.

Developed with evidence-based practices, these guidelines establish a unified European standard. Incorporated into the ESR iGuide clinical decision support platform, users can tailor recommendations to their needs from the evidence-based core. ESR iGuide, easily accessible to referring physicians, operates at the point of care. With support from affiliates like Quality and Safety in Imaging (QSI) GmbH, along with partnerships including the American College of Radiology and National Decision Support Company, the ESR leverages its experience and a proven technical platform to enhance international cooperation in evidence-based referral guideline development.

CDS and Referral

Guidelines

The European Society of Radiology recognizes the importance of imaging referral guidelines to enhance appropriateness and justification of radiological procedures, especially amid financial constraints and radiation exposure concerns. ESR iGuide addresses gaps in guideline availability and utilization in Europe. This clinical decision support system, leveraging software from National Decision Support Company, aims to offer evidence-based information and actionable support for imaging decisions at the point of care, promoting prudent radiation use.

Starting in 2014, senior radiologists appointed by the ESR began crafting European imaging referral guidelines based on American College of Radiology’s Appropriateness Criteria. These guidelines cover various medical areas and are integrated into the ESR iGuide platform. The goal is to address approximately 80% of daily practice requests by evaluating clinical scenarios, indications, and recommendations. A dedicated ESR Subcommittee on Referral Guidelines maintains and updates these guidelines annually in collaboration with the American College of Radiology. The joint ESR-ACR rapid response process coordinates content development.

Since 2016, ESR iGuide has been implemented in hospitals across over 10 European countries, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of medical imaging practices.
